Recently when walking along a street or taking a bus, you can see many signs of oriental medical clinics. On commercials about health-related products or TV programs about diseases and health, you can also see a lot of guys in white coats calling themselves `doctors in oriental medicine`, and boasting their knowledge about diseases as well as the human body. People look up to them, worship their sayings. The popularity of oriental medical schools is rising rapidly among university students and company workers, let alone high school students. Seemingly, at least in Korea, oriental medicine is shoulder-to-shoulder in terms of popularity and trustworthy. However, on the other hand, people die from heavy metal poisoning in herbal remedies, which are supposed to enrich their bodies. Other people are suffering from side effects like infection in acupuncture sites or steroid effect in herbal remedies. In Japan or China oriental medicine had rooted stably for thousands of years. But the situation has changed. In China, they regarded oriental medicine unscientific, so that they wiped it out after the Cultural Revolution. Also in Japan, the government does not consider it as an official way of treatment, so there is no official certificate for oriental medicine doctors. To those scientists or doctors in these countries, oriental medicine is just a field of research, from which researchers may find useful clues to their researches of get some inspiration. We also should not admit oriental medicine as a mainstream medicine in Korea.
